Job Details
Under the general direction of the University Registrar and the Associate Registrar for Evaluations and Degree Advisors, the Degree Advisor works collaboratively with other advising departments to ensure timely graduation of a diverse population of students. Primary responsibilities include identifying students in need of academic advising, assisting students in understanding their degree status, evaluating graduation applications and transcripts, and interpreting complex academic policies and procedures. Other primary responsibilities include facilitating informational workshops, implementing advising and evaluation models, and acting as a liaison between the Registrar's Office and other academic departments across campus. The incumbent must be able to act independently when dealing with complex and sensitive needs of a diverse student population.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisided and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
Possession of these knowledge and abilities typically is demonstrated through the Experience requirements below.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Required Qualifications 

EXPERIENCE:
  1. Experience in an Advising-related environment.
  2. Experience working with college or high school level students dealing with highly sensitive issues.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  1. Ability to work independently and possess self-direction skills to be able to initiate plans, organize, prioritize, multi­task, and coordinate work in a fast paced organization.
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Effective interpersonal skills.
  4. Presentation and public speaking skills.
  5. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  6. Knowledge of research techniques and methods.
  7. Ability to explain Title 5 Administration Code, CSU system and Sacramento State regulations and requirements.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships within and outside the work group and serve as a liaison for the organizational unit.
  9. Ability to work efficiently and effectively, and to adapt to change in a dynamic work environment.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Ability to pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications 
  1. Master's degree or equivalent from a four-year accredited college or university.
  2. Knowledge of campus programs involving student-related activities and graduation initiatives.
  3. Knowledge of General Education in the California State University system.
  4. Ability to use campus online resources (i.e., College Source, AACRAO and Assist) and Common Management System (CMS) including the Transfer Credit, Advising and Graduation-related modules, student file retrieval systems and related functions.
  5. Experience explaining the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to constituents.
  6. Knowledge and experience evaluating transfer documents to prepare to transfer credit evaluations.
  7. Experience working with at-risk students.
