Job Details

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. (An asterisk (*) denotes an ‘essential job function’ for ADA purpose.)

Duties: (daily, weekly, monthly)

Recruitment, Outreach and Application Review (75%)

• Using advanced and innovative technology and techniques, design, develop, execute and analyze a comprehensive, aggressive marketing and recruitment plan to attract a diverse, well-qualified applicant pool for all academic programs. Anticipate and react to changes in market and economy.*

• Manage the University’s goals to recruit and enroll a diversified, high-quality student body.*

• Design, develop, execute and/or modify a comprehensive electronic system for collection, review, data analysis, and decision notification for applications.*

• Manage an aggressive and effective follow-up program of all prospective undergraduate and graduate students.*

• Provide counseling and Immigration and Naturalization Service process information to current and prospective students. Approve I-20.

• Work closely with academic departments to develop admission schedules and processes for all programs.*

• Work closely with financial aid, registrar and student accounts to maximize yield of admitted applicants.*

Administrative and Professional Responsibilities (15%)     

• Recruit, select, train, develop, assign responsibilities to, and evaluate all Office of Admission staff.*

• Plan, develop and manage departmental budget.*

• Serve on SMU committees.

• Maintain close, effective relationships with all segments of the SMU community.*

• Cultivate and maintain regular professional contact with other counseling personnel at post-secondary institutions, as well as professional organizations/associations.

• Represent SMU professionally and responsibly to the public; particularly prospective students, their families and counselors. Interact positively with faculty, staff, and students.*

• Lead admission counseling staff to achieve the goals and objectives of the department and division.*

• Prepare regular and special reports for the Board of Regents, president’s council, academic departments, and SA.

• Perform other duties as requested.

Duties: (semester and other)

• Prepare department budget.

• Perform annual evaluation of direct reports.

Required skills:

  • Knowledge of technology, data base management and other reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with electronic admission processing, as well as financial aid packaging.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership, management and teamwork skills.
  • Creative, analytical, energetic and goal oriented.
  • Ability to interface with persons of various social, cultural, ethnic, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well in multi-task, multi-faceted environment while managing others.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute a comprehensive admission marketing and recruitment plan.
  • Working knowledge of legal and ethical issues pertaining to the admission process, as provided in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice, the SMU non-discrimination policy, etc.*

Education and experience:

  • Minimum qualifications: bachelor’s degree with commensurate experience may be acceptable.
  • Ten years of progressively successful admission experience as a director or associate director of admission, including supervisory responsibility.
  • Master degree preferred

Physical effort required:

  • Basically sedentary desk work, however, must be mobile.
  • Light lifting, up to 20 pounds required.
  • Ability to talk, expressing and exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Ability to write, expressing and exchanging ideas by means of the written word.
  • Auditory ability to receive detailed information through verbal communication.
  • Dexterity of the hands and fingers for keyboarding tasks.
  • Ability to push, pull, climb, stoop, bend, stand, and have flexibility of the upper and lower body.
  • Ability to rent a car and driving required.
